Africa Tells Its Own Story – Football Writes New Narrat

Seven semesters of studying, countless texts and theories and in the end, the desire to truly tell a story.

As part of my bachelor’s thesis, I fulfilled that goal by producing my own documentary-style sports reportage on African football.

For this project, I travelled to Morocco to cover the Africa Cup of Nations 2025 on location. The film focuses on what is often missing from European coverage: the voices of fans, the atmosphere surrounding the tournament, and the meaning of the AFCON in terms of identity, community, and pride. Rather than repeating familiar “underdog” narratives, the reportage highlights self-representation, professionalism, and the lived experience of the tournament from an African perspective.

This project is deeply personal to me. Football has been part of my life since childhood not only as a sport, but as a language that connects people. With this film, I combine my passion for football with my journalistic ambition: to tell stories that are close to people, respectful, and told from multiple perspectives.

This project represents what I want to pursue in sports journalism listening, contextualising, and making stories visible both in front of and behind the camera:
